We’re aware of a recent rise in fraudulent emails being sent to energy consumers that falsely claim to be from Energy Ombudsman.
These scam emails often state that Energy Ombudsman has “reviewed your case” and urge you to take action by completing a form. They may request personal information such as your full name, address, date of birth or bank details.
Energy Ombudsman will never ask you to open a new energy account or request sensitive personal information through online forms or email links.
Scam emails may:
Use Energy Ombudsman’s name or logo without permission
Refer to a complaint or review you haven’t submitted
Include links to fake websites or forms
Create a sense of urgency to pressure you into acting quickly
Be sent from a free email service such as Gmail
Contain spelling errors or slight variations of a company name
If you receive an unexpected message asking for personal details, do not click on any links and do not share any information.
Do not complete any forms or provide personal information
Report the email to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) by forwarding it to report@phishing.gov.uk
If you’re unsure whether a message claiming to be from Energy Ombudsman is genuine, contact them directly using the details on their official website, or your Dispute Resolution Executive if you already have an active case
Delete the email
While Energy Ombudsman works to remove these scam messages, please stay vigilant and share this information with friends or family who may be at risk. If you have any concerns, we’re here to help.
