A Day at Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary

Ten members of the Crown Gas & Power team swapped their desks for walking boots and spent the day volunteering at Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary. It was a brilliant, inspiring and thoroughly rewarding day, and one we’re proud to share with you.

About Bleakholt

Founded in 1957 after rescuing a donkey from slaughter, Bleakholt has grown into a 55-acre sanctuary caring for up to 350 animals at a time, from dogs, cats and rabbits to horses, donkeys and goats. Beyond rehoming, it also gives long-term sanctuary to animals that are elderly, ill or need extra support.

Funded entirely by public donations with no local authority support, Bleakholt needs around £1.6 million a year to keep going, so every volunteer hour and donation genuinely matters.

Our Day at the Sanctuary

Our team turned their hands to pretty much everything the sanctuary needed that day. Highlights included:

– Walking the dogs — giving them some exercise, company, and a change of scenery for the day
– Cleaning the grounds — sweeping and jet washing to keep the sanctuary looking its best for staff, visitors and animals alike
– Hands-on time tending to the animals themselves — getting stuck into some hard graft that usually falls to a small, stretched team of staff and regular volunteers
– Building Christmas boxes for the animals — getting a head start on festive enrichment for Bleakholt’s residents

It was a genuinely varied day, and a good reminder of just how much work goes on behind the scenes to keep a 55-acre sanctuary running smoothly for hundreds of animals.

Why It Matters

Charities like Bleakholt rely almost entirely on people giving their time, money and support, and with no local authority funding, that support is the difference between struggling and thriving. Spending a day there gave our team a first-hand look at the scale of what Bleakholt does, and just how much care, patience and hard work goes into looking after every single animal on site.
