Competitive 100% biomethane and blended energy contracts

Are you eager to reduce your business’s carbon emissions from your gas consumption? Our Biomethane range of products could be the solution for your business. Crown Gas & Power is committed to offering low carbon products to support the production of cleaner energy and reduce global carbon emissions.

We offer four Biomethane products to cater for all budgets.  Biomethane has a smaller carbon footprint when compared to natural gas meaning a switch to biomethane can help our planet.  Our biomethane products are below:

  • Bio100* – 100%  biomethane
  • Bio50 (blend) – 50% biomethane and 50% natural gas (carbon offset)
  • Bio25 (blend) – 25% biomethane and 75% natural gas (carbon offset)
  • Bio10 (blend) – 10% biomethane and 90% natural gas (carbon offset)

For more information on emissions, please visit the Greenhouse gas reporting: Conversion factors on www.gov.uk here

Here are four reasons to choose one of our Biomethane products:

  • ALL OUR BIOGAS IS PRODUCED HERE IN THE UK SUPPORTING BRITISH JOBS
  • FOR BLENDED PRODUCTS, WE HAND PICK CARBON OFFSETTING SCHEMES AND OFFSET THE NATURAL GAS EMISSIONS
  • WE PROVIDE CERTIFICATES TO DISPLAY AT YOUR PREMISES
  • WE HAVE BIOMETHANE PRODUCTS TO SUIT A RANGE OF BUDGETS

What is biomethane and how is it made?

  • Biogas is produced through a process called anaerobic digestion (AD) whereby bacteria breaks down organic materials in an oxygen-free environment.  Biomethane can be used as a substitute for natural gas as it has the same characteristics and very similar specifications as natural gas (its fossil fuel equivalent).
  • Biogas is produced from a range of organic materials (feedstocks) including maize, rye, food residues and landfill materials. Once the Biogas has been produced, it is refined, upgraded and injected into the gas network as biomethane.
  • There are over 750 operational anaerobic digestion plants in the UK, which is a significant rise from one facility in 2013. This number, alongside the ambitions for net zero living by 2050, shows the UK’s ambition for Biomethane to support the transition to clean energy.

NEW Bio10 for your business

Bio10 was introduced to our product range in 2024 as our entry level biomethane blended product.  It consists of:

  • 10% biomethane
  • 90% carbon offset natural gas

Your natural gas emissions will be offset on your behalf under either Gold Standard (GS) or Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) certified schemes.

Why biomethane is good for your business

Low carbon emissions

Burning gas from fossil fuels introduces carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that has been locked away for millions of years, this then causes climate damage, whereas biogas is produced from organic materials that are already present within the environment before being refined and upgraded to biomethane.

Accountability

The Green Gas Certification Scheme currently governs the process for all biomethane certificates.  The certification scheme tracks all biomethane from production through to consumption.  Biomethane certificates will be sent to customers after the contract start date (or live date if later).

Reduces reliance on fossil fuel gas

Every unit of biomethane displaces a unit of natural gas (fossil fuel) which helps reduce carbon emissions.  Organic waste is continuously created and can be used to create Biomethane, thus reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

How to switch to a biomethane agreement for your business

Speak to our team today to discuss switching your business to biomethane with a 10%, 25% or 50% biomethane blend or our 100% biomethane product.  Whilst there is a growing demand for biomethane, there is currently a limited volume of biomethane available in the UK.  Choosing a biomethane contract does attract a premium.  Prices for biomethane have changed considerably over the past few years as demand increases.
If you are purchasing biomethane to satisfy any reporting protocols, please check with your advisors that biomethane and market-based reporting meet your requirements.

Biomethane FAQs

How do I switch to a biomethane contract with Crown Gas & Power?

You can get a quote quickly and easily by heading here. Alternatively, you can contact our sales team on 0161 762 1883 or email us at quotes@crowngasandpower.co.uk.  If contacting us by email, please provide your Company Name, Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN), postcode and your desired contract start date.

Where do you source your biomethane?

Our biomethane is sourced from multiple UK producers and is administered through the Green Gas Certification Scheme.  All our biomethane is traded as Renewable Gas Guarantee of Origins (RGGO’s).

Why is biomethane more expensive?

Biomethane does attract a premium when compared to natural gas (fossil fuel).  This is why we created our blended product range to ensure there is an option for all budgets.

When do I receive my Green Gas certificate?

We aim to send out our certificates within three weeks of coming live.

How is biomethane fed into the gas transmission network?

Traditionally biomethane was captured, stored, and injected into the national grid as a separate process however recently National Grid confirmed a local plant was able to be connected directly to the transmission grid for the first time. See our biomethane article here.

We believe we’ll start seeing more plants being connected directly to the grid.
